I've Been Baking & Cooking. Here's What I Made This Week!

I have been baking and cooking a loy lately and thought I would share a collection of photos of what I have been up to. As an brand ambassador for AllRecipes.com I was asked to make three Al Fresco Chicken recipes this month. This is the Greek Salad with Spinach Feta Chicken Sausage.

Earlier this week I made Garlic Chicken Sausage and Summer Vegetable Saute.

This was the Liguini with Roasted Vegetables and Tomato Basil Chicken Meatballs, which I might add was delicious.

I whipped up some Cream Filled Cupcakes aka Hostness Cupcakes for my husband to take to work.

This was something different that I came across but wanted to try it since I had all of the ingredients. It is the Grilled Brie & Apple Sandwich  from the GoBoldWithButter.com website I found through AllRecipes.

My signature strawberry almond vanilla smoothie. It is great that I am throw this tasty drink together quickly.

This month I was also asked to make my favorite cocktail on AllRecipes.com as a brand ambassador. My drink of choice would be champagne. We don't keep any hard liquors in our home, so I searched through many champagne cocktail recipes which I have to say there is a lot to choose from!

I settled on the Champagne Cocktail recipe because the recipe didn't have any reviews or photos yet it sounded delicious. This drink is made with champagne, vanilla ice cream, and lemonade. (I used pink lemonade.)

Feeling inspired one morning, I decided to make a frozen toaster waffle but make it look like a breakfast you would be served at a nice retaurant.

I want to show you all that it is easy to do at home with a little creativity you can serve your guests, or a loved one a speical breakfast at home that looks and tastes good.

Well.....I had an open bottle of champagne so I have to use it up, right? I made another champagne cocktail.

This one is called Pomosa which is pomegrante and champagne. (I used a sprarkling pomegrante juice in mine. )

My drink of choice lately: Cold Chai or known as an Iced Chai at Starbucks. I have been making them at home since they are super easy to make. Equal parts of liquid chai concentrate and milk.

Put it in your to-go cup and your on your way and saving money.

I made this grilled cheese with brie, swiss, onions, and tomatos. I butter the bread with Compound Herb Butter from GoBoldWithButter.com This butter recipe is a must try!

Living Room : An Update... We're Almost There

We are finally at a point in our living room where we can actually sit and put our feet up.  We are not all the way finished, as we still have artwork and prints to hang (and decide where to put them) and I have a couple of other pieces that I'm in search of.  I'm very pleased with how it has come together - thank goodness.  After all of the thought, shopping, debating, thinking, shopping and finally purchasing, I actually like it!
You can look back at my inspiration board and original post to see what I had in mind and where I ended up : http://jennysteffens.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-new-living-room-design-board-great.html
Still to-do :
-Hang Drapes-Hang Artwork (waiting on a delivery I'm very excited about!)-Find console table for entry way (for mail, keys, etc.)-Joozsh (as Carson Kressley would say...)
As you might remember, we kept our original sofa (ordered from clubfurniture.com) that is upholstered in a natural belgium linen.  We also kept this leather chair that I bought from a designer in KC 3 years ago.  The end tables are new - I love the chunky turned legs and the slightly distressed black finish.

The two wing back chairs from Restoration Hardware work great by the fireplace as I had originally planned.  I was really worried that there wasn't going to be enough room between the entryway and the fireplace.

I love our new TV (LG 47" Smart TV).  I gave Mike the reins on it and he did an excellent job of picking out the perfect size and style so it would fit in without sticking out... and he installed it and was able to hide the wiring.  Yep, no cable box or cords in sight!

I have a couple of Fall touches peeking in here and there for some seasonal color... a Cinderella sitting by the fire.

A bunch of wheat on the mantle.  And, still loving the TV.

My order of wool blankets came last week and I'm thrilled.  I am still waiting on a couple more...  The pillow is from RH.

The new ottoman is the perfect soft centerpiece for Emma to make her way around.  I ordered it from RH in their indoor/outdoor fabric so it will hold up to stains really well.  It cost a little extra and took a little extra time, but it looks and feels just like our real belgium linen sofa.

Now we need gas logs for our fireplace!

Another little pumpkin peeking through!
Stay tuned for more updates on the house.  We've been hard at work on the kitchen and hope to share our DIY update soon!

Bite-Sized S'mores in the Oven | Easy Fall Dessert

To contact us Click HERE

Last fall I attended a party at Darcy Miller's home (editor of Martha Stewart Weddings) for the book launch of Peter Callahan's new book, Bite by Bite.  The entire cookbook is artfully created mini ideas for food.  One of the desserts served at the party were these little bite-size s'mores.  I've always loved s'mores, but there is something about these one bite, open-faced s'mores that are sooooo great.  They are not messy and they are so easy to make - they are ready in 45 seconds!

I made these mini s'mores as part of my Pumpkin Harvest Fall Entertaining class.  After a big filling bowl of butternut and beef chili and a cheddar jalapeno scone, these were the perfect tiny little sweet bite to end the class.

This isn't really a recipe, but more of a list of very simple instructions.

Cut the graham crackers into 1-inch squares (basically, 1 graham cut into 8ths).  Use a serrated bread knife to cut - it makes it very easy without too much breakage.

Cut small pieces of chocolate to fit on top of the graham pieces.

Line them up on a baking sheet.

Sorry, not pic of the last step!  Just cut a marshmallow into thirds with a hot, wet serrated knife and place them on top of the chocolate.

Put them in the oven under the broiler for 30-45 seconds.  Depending on your oven... watch them carefully, they will burn very quickly!

Happy Halloween! Making Emma's Lamb Costume & Decorating Cookies

Boo!  Or should I say, "Baaaa!"
Our little lamb!

Here is the making of the costume.  I used a really soft, fuzzy blanket that I found, cut it out and sewed it together.  It may have been my most successful sewing project to date - complete with an oatmeal linen lining!

Hey, Bright Eyes : )

Happy kids!

Sunday we took Emma to the Fairway Halloween festival at the park.  Sorry about the blurry picture... it is the only one I'm in!

Emma's Uncle Josh and Aunt Claire came to see her in her lamb costume.

Emma's very "in to" teeth and mouths...

Today Emma and I decorated cookies to take to her Mimi's house for Trick-or-Treating.

Her first hands-on sugar cookie experience... of many, many more.  Next up- Thanksgiving cookies!

To kick off the Holiday Season, I thought I'd share the mantle I created for the Home Depot Holiday Challenge.  After selecting bloggers to participate in their Holiday Challenge, they sent us supplies and gift cards to transform areas of our homes into winter wonderlands.  I was thrilled that I was selected to design a mantle... and was able to use my gift card to purchase gas logs for our fireplace!

Who sings that song that goes "you're just somebody who I used to know"?

Search
: just somebody that i used to know

Why: I heard a song with that line today, but I know another song from a long time ago with that same line. Is this a cover or something?

Answer: Well, no. This is a whole new song by Gotye (featuring Kimbra).
Gotye is Belgian-Australian. His real name is Wouter "Wally" De Backer.

The More You Know: That other song I was thinking of was by Elliott Smith. The twist is that this is not the version I know - the one I know is a cover by someone else. It doesn't appear to be on my iPod (which I plugged in for the first time in 4+ months specifically for this), and I can't remember enough details about the voice to figure it out. It's frustrating. If anyone has any details, plz halp.

What's the difference between a blimp and a zeppelin?

: blimp zeppelin

Why: Corbett took Leigh on a blimp ride for his b-day. Nbd.

What makes a blimp not a zeppelin? The shape? The material? Are zeppelins even a thing anymore?

Answer: For starters, both blimps and zeppelins are dirigibles.
A dirigible is any lighter-than-air craft that is both powered and steerable (as opposed to free floating, like a balloon). Blimps, rigid airships, and semi-rigid airships are all dirigibles.
The name comes from the French verb diriger, "to steer."

A rigid airship has a rigid framework that maintains its shape. It also has one or more gas cells.

The USS Shenandoah
A zeppelin is a rigid airship made by a specific company, the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin ("Zeppelin Airship Construction Company") of Germany. The guy who started that company was one Mr. von Zeppelin (actually a Count).

A blimp - technically a "pressure airship" - has no rigid inner structure. Its shape is maintained by the pressure of the gases within its envelope. If it deflates, it loses shape.

Turns out: the thing Corbett and Leigh rode in was actually a zeppelin.

The More You Know: The LZ-129 Hindenburg was a zeppelin (LZ = Luftschiff Zeppelin). At more than 800 feet long, it remains one of the largest objects to ever fly (even bigger than a pterosaur).

From its completion in March 1936 until its fiery disaster in May 1937, the Hindenburg provided the fastest and most comfortable way to fly across the Atlantic. In 1936, it made 17 round trips from the hangar in aviation town Friedrichshafen in Southern Germany over the Atlantic - 10 times to the US and 7 to Brazil. The flight to New York was something like 62 hours long. From New Jersey to Frankfurt, the Hindenburg's best time was 43 hours and 2 minutes.

According to passenger / reporter Webb Miller, passenger accommodations were enclosed in about 4,500 square feet. There 25 two-bed one-sink cabins, a promenade flanked by windows, a salon with writing desks and a piano, and a dining room. Below deck were shower / baths, toilets, kitchens, a smoking room, and a bar.

Tickets were $400 (~$5000 today). People were classy.

Nazis notwithstanding, it sounded very nice.
