I've seen the commercials about The Shops at Target these past few weeks, but truthfully the concept behind this collaboration left me cold. These "Shops" are what excite the buyers for Target (as even their commercials admit), not me the customer. I think Target forgot who they were selling to when they put this collaboration together.
Let me explain. I don't own a pet, so there was no reason for me to venture into the Polka Dot Bakery section. Like most Americans, I'm trying to lose weight, so I can't have any goodies from The Candy Store section. I wear very little makeup and am set in the brands I use (after years of trial and error, I now don't stray from Chanel lip gloss and foundation, La Mer powder, and Tiffany perfume), so meandering into the Cos Bar section would pretty much be a waste of my time. And as for the Privet House section, I felt there was nothing there so distinctive that a similar item couldn't be found at a Pier 1 or Cost Plus or (gasp) Target itself for around the same price.
So how many shops have I shot down so far? Four? That left just The Webster that only slightly interested me. And by "slightly," I actually mean "not at all." You see, although I love florals, the whole Miami tropical print on flowy dresses just isn't my style, a realization I formed when I saw Uli Herzner on Season 3 of Project Runway. I appreciated her beautiful designs throughout the competition, all the while knowing I would never ever wear any of her dresses except maybe as nightgowns.
So I didn't bother to check out The Shops at Target collaboration when it debuted this past weekend. Instead, my husband and I took our 20-month old baby to the zoo for his first time.
I had a doctor's appointment this morning though. Since the appointment was at 9:30am, I had about an hour to kill after dropping off DH at work and BB at daycare. So I decided to pop in to Target and see if any baby clothes went on clearance. Sometimes when they go on clearance for 70% off, I can get some amazing deals. Today, I happened to find this Circo "Hello" tee on the clearance rack for 70% off, which meant the final price came out to just $1.50. Score!
On my way to the register, I had to pass The Webster section so I briefly leafed through the racks. Most pieces, as I suspected, were turn-offs for me. But I found a section of color-blocked cardigans that stopped me in my tracks. The design of the contrasting trims on these cardigans hinted at the style of high-end fashion houses such as Chanel or St. John, the material felt soft but the weight of the cardigan was medium-weight so it would be warm during cold months, the brass-colored buttons were ever so elegant and the two small pockets above the ribbed waist added a little touch of detail to an otherwise very simple cardigan.
The color-blocked cardigans came in two different colors: pink or cream. For me, it was no contest. I immediately took the cream, which had green and black contrasting trim. The color palette of the cream cardigan was fresher, I felt, than the pink. The cream one also looked more expensive and mature, while the pink one looked more casual and more suited for a younger person than me. And, finally, cream is a color that matches everything, while the same can not always be said for pink.
I briefly tried the cardigan on in the dressing room. Everything about the cardigan was perfect, except the sleeves were too long for me. I wondered if I had short arms. Then I shrugged and put the cardigan in my shopping cart anyway. I could always roll up the sleeves.
Back at home, I did a quick google search. Here is a photo of Emma Roberts in the same cardigan. After seeing how she scrunches up the sleeves of the cardigan, I felt better about the length of my own arms.
And finally, here is more information from the Target website. From what I've read online and seen in stores, it looks like there is no stampede to this Target collaboration.
