I am quite late when it comes to jumping on the collar-shaped necklace bandwagon. Oh, I've played with collar necklaces before, just not collar collar necklaces.
The reason? I don't know. I guess part of me just felt that it wasn't a necessary item for me. After all, if my shirt already has a collar, why bother with a collar-shaped necklace then. And if my top didn't, especially if the top had a lower neckline or was a corseted top, I worried that wearing a collar-shaped necklace would make me look a bit like a Playboy bunny.
But when I saw this pearlescent collar necklace at Forever 21, I thought, "Why not? It's only $8.80. I'll have fun with the trend and see where it takes me." Once I got home, I tried the necklace with a few tops. It worked better with some than with others.
Here is the biggest problem I have with the necklace - the black sash in the back. When I bought the necklace, I knew I wasn't going to like the sash. I hate tying sashes behind me where I can't see them; that is why I almost always remove sash belts on any dresses I buy and change them for real leather belts. Well, with this necklace, what I found was that the fact I had to tie a sash behind my neck wasn't even the worst part that bothered me. What I hated was actually the black color of the sash. If the top wasn't a black color, the sash showed against the top. If the neckline was too low, the sash showed against my skin.
Since I'm not a fan of the sash anyway, I am planning to make a trip to Michaels or Jo-Ann and see if I can get a metal chain with a hook or lobster claw to replace the sash. I think once I make the change, I'll like the necklace a little bit more.
By the way, even though I had problems with the sash design, I am finding that collar-shaped necklaces are growing on me. I've since been looking at Ebay and Etsy, and I may look for a few other collar-shaped necklaces to add to my accessories collection.
